Making the right financial decisions at a young age #SHGenworth

•

My son is in his last year of college and we have been discussing what happens when he finishes. He has a decent job to go back to, which is definitely something to be happy about these days, but he also needs to think beyond work. I want him to start off on the right foot, and not spend his life struggling financially. I want him to own his first home from a young age so that it is paid for long before he is ready to retire. It’s hard for a twenty year old to think about things like mortgages and retirement, so they need to be educated as to why it is important. I would like to get him to sit down with someone at Genworth Financial to make a plan on how he can meet his goals. I really wish I had done something like that when I was his age, so I hope that he will follow through!

I don’t really remember my parents talking to me about buying a house or saving for retirement, but my father definitely made sure I understood the need for life insurance. As a former insurance salesman, he always had his own life insurance and when I had my first child and was ready to move out on my own (yes…those two things were simultaneous), he made sure I knew how important it was for me to have a life insurance policy for myself and my son. I have always carried life insurance since then, and now I’m teaching my son about it so that he can choose the right policy for his needs.

Did your parents talk to you about life insurance and financial planning? Did it impact your financial decisions?

My parents didn’t talk to me about finances because they didn’t really know what to do themselves. Luckily, my fiancee {who I’ve been with since I was 15- pre-careers & college} got some advice from his parents and did his own research and he was able to buy us a house when he was just 21, which will be paid off before we’re 30. I’m so grateful that at least one of us knows what we’re doing!

I used to work for a financial advisor, and after seeing what his clients had to go through when their spouses passed away…I can’t imagine NOT having life insurance. Even if you can only afford a $10,000 term life policy, it is so worth it to protect your family! When my cousin died a few year years ago, his family couldn’t even afford to have him cremated, let alone a funeral. We had to take collections and ask the local church for help. It was really sad.

My parents did and didn’t. They taught us to work hard and save our money, but life insurance wasn’t something they were accustomed to.

My parents never discussed anything regarding money so I had to learn the hard and fast way on my own. Thankfully I have stressed financial responsability to my daughter and she’s off to a good start.

My parents didn’t talk about specifics, but they always instilled in my the value of saving and being financially responsible. I think encouraging him to speak to a “financial advisor” at 20 is a great idea.

My parents didn’t talk to me at all about money…or any other life skill either for that matter. I’ve lived month to month my entire life.

I was lucky that my parents made sure to talk to me about all of this stuff. At the age of 35, I owned my home. Free and clear. That alone is a huge blessing.

We have tried to show are kids the importance of saving money and how important it is to not to buy something just because they have the money for it. My parents never really talked about financial issues and I think it is very important.

I think it was mentioned inadvertently over time so I knew they had protection, and I suppose that’s how I came up knowing of the importance.
