An Update on Kellen & Ulcerative Colitis

August 2012 – healthy

I’ve had a lot of people asking how Kellen is doing (thank you…I appreciate knowing that people are thinking of him), so I wanted to share this update.

THE BACKGROUND…

Dealing with my son’s diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis has been life changing for our family. He was sick for months before getting the diagnosis and my mind had gone to some very dark places in that time, so having the diagnosis was a step in the right direction. I am not an alarmist and I didn’t run to the internet for information right away. I instead chose to listen to the doctor and nurses and dietician at the hospital. They taught us about his condition and told us what treatments they would do, and what the next step would be if the treatment didn’t work. I have felt well informed and listened to since we met our Pediatric Gastroenterologist. I trust him implicitly. He recognized the severity of Kellen’s illness right away, he asked all of the right questions and within ten minutes of meeting him he told me what no one else had been able to figure out for months…that Kellen had colitis. He couldn’t tell me what kind of colitis without more testing, which he arranged right away, and on completion of the endoscopy he promptly admitted my son to the hospital. I have never been so relieved. Kellen was very sick and I felt like someone was finally recognizing this and taking steps to get him better.

TREATMENT…

March 2013 – End of hospital stay

The typical treatment for a UC flare is prednisone. Kellen was taking this in large doses, along with many other medications. Unfortunately, it has many side effects. It stunts his growth, causes weight gain and water retention and can cause him to be easily agitated. Kellen’s change in appearance has impacted how he feels about himself. He no longer wants to swim (something he loved in the past) and his joints are hurting him. This has been a tough road. Watching your child get needles and medication sucks. Hugging your child while he cries that he doesn’t want to be sick anymore sucks. Worrying about missed school, medication side effects and the future…. well, it sucks. I hate seeing him this way and I wish I could just make it all go away.

FRIENDS…

It hasn’t all been bad though. Kellen learned that he has some really great friends. His classmates put together a book for him where they each made him a picture and wrote something to him. They were sweet and funny and it was just what he needed at the time. My friend Pam and her family came to see Kellen in the hospital which was great for him because her son is a good friend of his. I realized what a kind and caring person Stephanie is when she offered to help out if we needed anything, even though I didn’t know her very well. The Telus team has been incredibly kind and even offered to send Kellen a gift to cheer him up. Many other friends sent well wishes and tried to help out however they could, and people who have the same illness have come forward to offer their support. Kellen has a lot of supporters.

WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW…

In late April we met with the doctor and discussed our options. The prednisone was not working and Kellen needed to try something new. An IV medication was the next option. He is weaning off of the prednisone but that will take some time. He had his first IV infusion at the beginning of May and his second infusion two weeks later. We have been told we should see results after the third infusion which will be in another nine days. Please keep Kellen in your prayers while we try to get him into remission so that he can enjoy his life again! Hopefully the next update will be announcing his remission.

Yes! We are hoping and praying for a remission post really, really soon. It’s been a tough year for Kellen, and would really like to see things improve. Kellen has shone like a superstar through the whole ordeal.

Poor baby. I have been on Prednisone in the past and it is not nice stuff. I am praying this next form of treatment works for him and I am so glad to hear he has some great friends to fall back on!

Thank you so much for sharing! I am quite familiar with Crohn’s/UC throuh my work. Most patients I know that have been steroid-dependent or have flared on steroids have done really well with the injections (Humira or Remicade). I really hope he responds well and gets into remission quickly! My thoughts are with you!

Medication is a tricky beast. For many it’s necessary but the side effects sometimes seem worse than the illness they are supposed to be helping. This would be quite an ordeal for an adult and it’s likely multiplied many times for a child. I’m so glad that you have option for helping your son and I truly hope you are able to find a workable solution with your doctor so you son can lead a happy and healthy life 🙂

I have kept up with your updates on Facebook, but did not understand the severity of what Kellen has been going through until now. I cannot imagine. I’m so glad you found a doctor that recognized how sick he was and started treatments. I hope after the third round, you guys see some great results! I’m adding Kellen to my prayer list.

I have been thinking about Kellen and your family. I’m so glad to hear they figured out what it was and are able to treat it. It’s got to be so tough for him and you to have those side effects though and I hope the iv infusions work better. I’m glad you found such a great doctor, that makes such a difference when dealing with something like this. I’ll keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry and I know the feeling he has with prednisone which made me gain a huge amount of weight and made me have anxiety so bad, and you are hungry all the time, even our dog was the same when she was on it, it also thinned my skin to where you can poke a hole in it and thats why I am sick and keep getting serious infections, I can’t believe the change it makes in people and your son is so young, does he get to go off the medication when it’s under control? I am so sorry I did not realize your family was going through this, hopefully he comes off the prednisone and he will go back to swimming, I am an adult and still have not come to terms with it after 6 years it’s really hard mentally and for image and the medical condition as well.Hope everything turns out and I know as a mother you had your stress for sure, better stop rambling! <3

Yes, he has the same thing with his skin! It is very thin. And he never stops eating. I can’t afford to keep him in food and his ever-changing clothing sizes.

Best wishes. My husband also has UC, he was diagnosed at 16. He’s done extended hospital stays, IV prednisone and even required blood transfusions due to his iron levels. He has been in remission (more or less) for 5-6 years now, and nips flares in the bud with Salofalk enemas (on top of 8 pills of Salofalk daily and lots of Imodium).

I’ve been suffering with Crohn’s for years, 3 years ago I tried Remicade it helped so much but still had lots of issues, for the past 2 years I’ve been on Remicade, that has helped me out but so many side effects..so now we are going to boost my injections to 4 monthly instead of 2 times a month..holding off on some great things if not then it’s surgery again.

Your son is in my prayers..no one know how much we suffer from aches and pains like another Crohn’s victim..yep I consider myself a victim..it has crippled my life so much..great things are coming for sure,. need to stay positive, meds are way better than we I was first treated with Crohn’s in 1990.

Thankfully Kellen doesn’t have Crohn’s. I know they are similar but I really feel for those of you with Crohn’s. It has it’s own unique set of complications. I hope you won’t need surgery again.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that this new treatment works for him. I understand the scaryness of the hospital and the not knowing what to do. My boys have asthma/allergies and it’s been awful at times. My intro to ambulances/kids in ER. I can’t imagine how you feel with so many unknowns still. You sound so put together even with all this going on. ((HUGS)) to both of you. I hope this works and that over the next while something great will come up for people who suffer from it so that he gets to benefit from the newest and best treatments to stay in remission. I’m glad you stayed off the internet, too. Way too much contradictory stuff there. It sounds like you have an amazing medical team to get you through this.

My husband went through all of that. He wasn’t diagnosed until he was in his 30’s though as no dr believed he was actually sick. He was way too healthy looking, blood count awesome and lots of energy. I know what you’re going through and prednisone is such an awful thing to deal with. I hope your Kellen gets a treatment that works for him and he gets back to feeling good again. Please tell him there are lots of people who are thinking of him.

Sending prayers for him and you. Have you ever thought of changing his diet? I’ve heard of lots of success of people going on the GAPS diet for this.

    1. Sheri Avatar
      Sheri

I have definitely considered this. We are looking at a few options and I’ve discussed it with his doctor and dietician. Right now he is on a very restricted diet because he is in a flare. Once he is remission we can try some new options. There are people who have found success with GAPS or Celiac or Paleo, and our doctor says it’s okay to try as long as he’s getting the calories he needs, so we are going to figure out the best option for Kellen and see what works. I’m guessing we will be figuring it out for awhile.
