On Canada Day weekend I gathered the family and we went out to enjoy some fireworks. While we definitely enjoyed them, the mosquitoes enjoyed us a little more. I had sprayed bug spray on the adults and all of our chairs and hoped that it would be enough to ward off the pesky bugs, but unfortunately it wasn’t. My youngest son proved to get the worst of it. He had so many bites that he looked a little like he had the chicken pox!
To ease the itch and irritation he was experiencing, we put some baking soda in a tub of warm water for him to soak in, and I picked up some medicated cream. I wish I had some of Orange Naturals new Bites+Stings homeopathic formulas. They are available in liquid and new cream form and they would have provided the natural relief I was looking for. I am definitely ordering some for our medicine cabinet.
Here are some tips to avoid getting bit by mosquitoes:
- Wear lose fitting and light coloured clothing
- Ensure there is not rain water pooling anywhere, and do not gather near bodies of water, particularly at night
- Avoid scented soaps and shampoos
- Light citronella candles
- Rub garlic on your skin
- Rub lavender, eucalyptus or cinnamon oil onto your pulse points
- Carry dryer sheets in your pockets
- Plants varieties of flowers and plants that mosquitoes avoid, such as mint, basil, rosemary, marigold, vanilla scented geraniums, garlic, lemon balm and citronella plants
- Place bat houses in trees around your home, so that they will eat the mosquitoes
Summer can be enjoyed outdoors with spraying harmful chemicals to keep the bugs away. Share your bug repelling tips in the comments.
