Have you ever returned home after a long day at work or school and wondered what exactly was going on in the house while you were away? When I leave the house, my dog is usually peering out the front door watching me leave. When I return, he is usually in the same spot and I sometimes wonder if he stayed there all day waiting for me. However, when I enter the house I can usually see that isn’t the case. The occasional chewed up toy and frequent torn apart Kleenexes are examples of how he may have spent his day, but after watching The Secret Life of Pets I wonder if there is more to it.
The Secret Life of Pets is the fifth fully animated feature-film collaboration by Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures. It is a cute and hilarious movie about a group of pets and the mischief they get into when left home alone during the day. Their personalities vary as much as every human being’s and they manage to each find their own unique way of getting through a long day at home alone… or in some cases, outside of the home.
“Max, voiced by Louis C.K., is a loyal terrier living a perfectly happy existence until his owner, Katie (Ellie Kemper) brings home Duke (Eric Stonestreet) a big, boisterous mutt she finds at the shelter. When Max and his unruly new “roommate” slip away from their dog-walker, they find themselves lost in the urban jungle of New York City. In an attempt to stay ahead of animal control and a rebel band of abandoned pets led by an unhinged bunny named Snowball (Kevin Hart), they put aside their differences to survive the epic journey back home.”
So I wonder, if my little shih-poo managed to get out of the house in the big city, what would he do? As a cute and fluffy old dog who looks like a puppy, I’m sure he would work his charms on someone fairly quickly. He loves everyone and all animals so I don’t think he would hide from animal control. He would probably jump up and lick them, getting himself a quick trip to the pound.

My family saw the movie in theatres but we are still excited about the Blu-ray/DVD release because of the bonus features! There are three mini-movies to be seen including Norman Television, Weenie and Mower Minions, as well as some fun musical bonus features. You can see which actors portray the animals in the film and learn a little more about household pets in more of the bonus features. Exclusive to the Blu-ray copies, you will learn how to make an animated film and you can see the steps it takes to create a specific scene in The Secret Life of Pets.
