What to Wear: Hunting for Dinosaur Bones in Alberta

•

This summer I had the privilege of visiting Calgary, Alberta and going on dinosaur bone dig in Dinosaur Provincial Park. This is a trip that anyone who loves history, dinosaurs or the outdoors needs to do. The cost to go on a dig is actually far less than I would have guessed, making it a bucket list item that can truly be achieved. The only real question is, what do you wear for a summer dinosaur dig?

Pin Me!

Footwear is of the utmost importance. You are trekking through the badlands, which means you need a good hiking boot that will keep you feet dry and provide some traction. While I didn’t see any, there are rattle snakes in the badlands, so a higher boot is a good idea to protect your ankles from snake bites. These Keen hiking boots  on Amazon are a great example of a waterproof boot for hiking the badlands.

Choose hiking pants that are going to keep you cool and dry for a summer dig. Pants are preferable to shorts because you will be on the ground while you dig. While you are provided with something to kneel on for comfort, pants like the ones below are great for the added protection at the knees.

A moisture wicking shirt is a must while under the sun in the badlands, and one that covers your arms is also a good idea to protect yourself from the sun. You can provide yourself some extra bug protection with a mosquito shirt as well.

I wore a ball cap to the dinosaur dig, and while that is perfectly acceptable to keep the sun off of your head, it did get quite dirty and my head was hot. A hat like this Tilly hat provides sun protection and offers airflow, and they are easy to wash. I own one already and really wish I had thought to pack it for that trip.

Once you have your wardrobe ready, grab a backpack and make sure it is stocked with sunblock, bug repellent and an insulated water bottle that will help you stay cool.

So I live in Alberta & have been to Drumheller often. I didn’t know about the Dig & Discover Packages. Great advice for what to wear. It is usually very hot there but flip flops wouldn’t be a good idea. We love the river views too.
    Thanks for this Sheri.
