My husband and I save money on our Florida vacations by driving, usually with two drivers and a spacious van to let the 3 kids spread out. This summer both my husband and the van had to stay behind while the kids and I got to take a trip to The Palm Beaches, Florida.
In preparation for the trip, I picked up some USB car chargers so that everyone in the front and back would be able to keep their devices charged. After adding a box of tissues and some garbage bags, I plugged an air freshener into the air vent at the front of the car because two teenagers, a tween and a middle aged mom were not going to keep such a small place smelling pretty without some help.
Next I loaded all three kids, a few suitcases (because everyone likes to have their own, not because I overpack), water bottles that I hoped they wouldn’t indulge on too much and several snacks into our little Chevy Cruze for the 21 hour drive to Florida.
The trip down was made over two days, with an overnight rest in Georgia before we reached our destination. Along the way, we made several bathroom breaks, shared anecdotes, took naps (the kids, not me), sang along with the radio and made some lasting memories. One thing we didn’t do was complain about the smell!
The drive home was less enthusiastic. In a bid to get home quickly, I chose not to stop at a hotel overnight and drove straight through, aside from a couple of short naps at rest stops. Patience was at a minimum and everyone just wanted to get out of that car! The only thing that remained fresh on the drive home was the air. At least our air freshener made one part of the trip bearable. Despite it all, we made more memories and enjoyed our family time together.
